Mahomets beach is only metres from the Ocean West units and is one of Geraldton's most popular beaches. Be it for fishing, swimming, water sports or just lazing on the sand, the beach provides for perfect relaxation. ~ close this window ~ Geraldton's many and varied beaches provide excellent conditions for the whole gambit of sailing activities. Areas range from huge expanses of flat water for slalom sailing inside the reefs, to smooth rolling waves with forgiving falls and an absence of shore-breaks for the intermediate sailor. When the swell cranks in there are some big waves available for the serious port tack wave hunters. Windsurfing is hugely popular in Geraldton as the conditions are ideal all year round for this exciting water sport: it is so reliable that most days you are guaranteed an awesome sail. In fact, Geraldton is regarded as one of the best windsurfing locations in the world with the best wind conditions around November to April. The strongest breezes occur mid summer and are ideal for high-speed slalom racing. Geraldton's windiest locations are Point Moore, and St Georges Beach. Both offer ideal slalom sailing for beginners in the morning. Late morning and afternoon for advanced. Surfing is also enjoyed along this part of the West Australian coast. Popular surfing locations include Coronation, Medallia, Pages, Point Moore, Separation Point, Sunset and St Georges beaches. Diving charters are also available, which explore the Batavia shipwreck. Water-ski hire, from beginners to experts, is also available locally. Geraldton's main surfing beach is the Back Beach (Mahomets Beach), which has a shore break, and is directly opposite Ocean West. For pure fun you can also enjoy parasailing, hire catamarans or canoes, or have a go on a sea biscuit! ~ close this window ~ Geraldton has two golf clubs ... so bring those clubs with you on your break in the Mid West! Geraldton also boasts a modern Aquatic Centre with several heated indoor and outdoor pools - the centre also provides sporting facilities for a wide range of games both indoor and outdoor, including basketball, netball, tennis, hockey, cricket and soccer. If a more leisurely sport is your thing, there are two lawn bowling clubs to choose from.
